The mephitic vapors of volcanic deliration

Fade out, or separate after you

unlock them, and

…One glimpses what tokens like Babel rush forth

collecting ill hair in clumps of Campanian ash

Stumbling over the rimose ground from which tufts of

hands stretch forth leavening the evening:

Restless nightfall & heaven’s squall—

the upheaval of dirt has created

a field of poems

Poem is a  09/01/09 collaboration by Matina Stamatakis and C Mehrl Bennett

Image originally published at Verse Wisconsin (Spring 2010 issue) and then as the cover of the anthology: LOCAL GROUND(S)-MIDWEST POETRICS (Selected Prose from Verse Wisconsin 2009-2014), edited by Sarah Busse & Wendy Vardaman, Cowfeather Press, Middleton, WI, 2014
